Arjun Appadurai
Professor at the University of Pennsylvania and
specialist in socio-cultural anthropology, globalization and public culture.
His academic work has covered areas such as the anthropology of consumption,
the mass media the concepts of territory in modern nation states.
Didier Fiuza Faustino
After graduating in architecture he was one of
the founder members of LAPS Laboratoire dArchitectures Performances
et Sons and of the Le Fauteuil Vert studio in Paris. He is also a founder
and artistic director of Número magazine. His work extends over
various fields, from architecture to product design, and including the
visual arts, video, performance and writing.
Diogo Terroso
Diogo Terroso (Portugal), graduated in Communication Design and has a
Masters Degree in Digital Arts - Multimedia. He lives currently in London,
where he recently concluded an MA Degree in Communication Design - Multimedia
at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.
His work with digital media involve a range of interrelated interests
including science, technology, art and design. His research has been focus
into the overlapping relations of New Science and Web Design, studying
aspects of biology, artificial life and chaos theory to create web environments.
Recent Internet project, TRANS-KP | Regenerative Online Interface, is
a web-based multi-user interface that produces an evolutionary immersive
experience. At the moment, he prepares a PhD Research on Evolutionary
Design for Online Virtual Environments.

Dub Video Connection + João Vinagre
Dub Video Connection is a duo comprising Rui
Valério and João Carrilho working in the field of video,
with regular performances at Lux. They took part in the mixmedia event
Houseware Experience and are currently working on the Yorn parties. They
will be working here with João Vinagre, who has worked in graphic
design and video since
graduating in media design from FBAUL.
dECOI
Mark Goulthorpe
Founded by Mark Goulthorpe, Yee Pin Tan and Zainie
Zainul in 1991, dECOI is an architectural studio based in Paris, taking
a critical approach to the basic principles of architecture. In their
own words, they explore crossing paths from Beuys to Derrida, and
from Roussel to Forsythe and achieve a fusion between different
geographical and cultural territories.
Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta + João Paulo Feliciano
Degrees in architecture, urban development and
music. A researcher in multiple fields, working on projects in architecture,
urban development contemporary music using virtual reality and cyber-space
technologies. For his contribution to the cycle 1000 Plateaux he has invited
the artist and musician João Paulo Feliciano for a live dialogue.
Jam System
Marco Sousa Santos
Multiple-author experience, based on an original
idea by the designer Marco Sousa Santos, on modus operandi in computer
assisted design. An exercise in imagining what studios will be like in
the future, using the website and CD-Rom formats and content developed
by a group of Portuguese designers and architects, on the basis of 3D
representation.
João Magalhães Rocha
Architect, with a Masters in Advanced Architectural
Design from Columbia University, New York. He has produced his own architectural
designs, including a house in Restelo and another in Arrábida,
in conjunction with Luísa Caldas and Nuno Vidigal, respectively.
José Pinto Duarte
Architect, with a masters degree from Massachusetts
Institute of Technology. Research assistant at LNEC (National Civil Engineering
Laboratory) where he works in design/construction based on computer systems.
He has concentrated on developing a system for mass produced housing based
on modular systems.
Lia
Dividing her time between Vienna and Porto where
she has worked with Rev Design on various projects. She describes herself
as a graphikprogrammer, a combination of programmer and graphic

Luísa Caldas
Architect, and holder of a MSc in environmental
design and engineering from the University of London. She attended the
doctoral course at the University of California Berkely, in the United
Syayes. She is currently preparing her doctoral thesis at MIT. She is
researching the applications of genetic computing in the design and operation
of buildings.
LOT/EK Architecture
Ada Tolla + Giuseppe Lignano
Ada Tolla and Giuseppe Lignano, two Italian architects,
founded their own company, LOT/EK, in New York in 1992. Their work is
strongly inspired by the contrast between technological needs and aesthetic
aspects, and by the co-existence of these two universes, exploring ways
of reusing existing objects.
Mário Feliciano
Graphic designer, co-founder of the Secretonix
studio, musician and composer. He has taken part in various exhibitions
and initiatives I the visual arts, using his graphic design and typographical
work as background. He has worked as international consultant and designer
for Adobe Systems Inc. since 1998.
Matt Mullican
Artist trained at the California Institute of
Arts. He questions visual systems in the context of psychologically pre-determined
mechanisms of cultural perception. He has created installations, interactive
pieces, virtual representations of urban organization system and models
of an imaginary city.
MIT Media Lab
Casey Reas
Casey Reas studied at the College of Design,
Architecture, Art and Planning of the University of Cincinnati. Associate
lecturer at the Interactive Design Institute Ivrea. He has been working
and studying at the MIT Media Laboratory directed by Professor John Maeda.
His work has been exhibited at a number of museums in the United States.
NOX
Lars Spuybroek
Lars Spuybroek is the director of NOX, an architectural
practice based in Rotterdam working on research into the relations between
architecture and the new media. He is currently working on the design
of interactive buildings in Holland, Germany and England, establishing
relations between architecture and the World Wide Web.
Rev Design
The members of Rev Design are Miguel Carvalhais,
Miguel Salazar and Pedro Pinto. They work in media design, but are best
known for their web designs. They have designed sites for Ananana, Force-inc,
Mille-plateaux, Ritornell, Experimenta and others.
Teresa Cruz
Lecturer in the Media Studies Department at the
Universidade Nova de Lisboa, where she teaches Image and Representation
Theory and Art and Communication. She has a doctorate in Aesthetics and
Theory of Art, and has published several essays in this area and directs
an on-line magazine.
The Designers Republic
Ian Anderson
A graphic design company founded in 1986 by Ian
Anderson and Nick Philips, The Designers Republic worked initially design
for techno music. Flyers, record covers and the subversion of world famous
logos and advertising slogans propelled this English collective to international
fame.
Thomas Leeser
Studied Architecture at RWTH in Aix-la-Chapelle
and the Bartlett School of Architecture in London. Guest professor at
Renssealaer Polytechnical Institute and since 1998 assistant lecturer
at RWTH in Aix-la--Chapelle. Leeser created his own firm in 1998 with
Silvan Linden and Anne-Julchen Bernhardt.

Reena Jana
American magazine on electronic art and contemporary
culture. Published every two months, the magazine is based in New York
and was launched in 1998. Currently edited by Reena Jana.
Asymptote
Studio founded in 1988 by Hani Rashid and Lise
Anne Couture, working in the field of diluting frontiers and exploring
the potential of new technologies. From architecture, at the most varied
scales, the studios work extends to digital landscapes and installations,
and has been included in various collections.
C-Theory
C-Theory is an on-line magazine on theory, technology
and culture, edited from Canada by Arthur and Marilouise Kroker. The magazine
publishes articles, interviews and surveys of trends in theoretical thinking
on the media scene.
Greg Lynn
Founder of the US studio FORM. This studio has
created partnerships in the fields of architecture, fashion design, graphic
design and other areas. Central to their work has been the computer as
a working tool in architecture design and the integration of animation
and 3D programmes.
Makoto Sei Watanabe
Graduated in 1974 from Yokohama National University.
Founded his own architectural studio in 1984. Watanabe believes that architecture
should make the invisible visible. The floating quality of
his spaces was clear in his designs for the K-Museum in Tokyo (1996) and
in installations presented in different contexts.
Miguel Soares
The artist, Miguel Soares, studied equipment
design at the Lisbon Faculty of Fine Art, and his work has combined disciplines
such as design, photography, installation and video.
Neil Denari
Architect, teacher and writer. He completed his
doctorate in architecture at Harvard University in 1982. Awarded countless
international prizes, his work and designs are to be found in public collections,
such as those of the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York, the San Francisco
Museum of Modern Art and FRAC in Orléans.
Ron Arad
After studying at the Jerusalem Academy of Arts,
he graduated in architecture in London where he currently lives. His work
in industrial design shows a limitless exploration of formal limits, combining
unusual materials, high tech methods and sculptural forms of unexpected
visual impact.
Tomato
The Tomato collective was founded in 1991 as
a graphic design studio and has since widened its scope to include film,
television, advertising, corporate identity and communication strategies.
They take part regularly in exhibitions throughout the world, and have
been curators of many others.
UN Studio Ben Van Berkel & Bos
Ben Van Berkel studied architecture in Amsterdam
and London. With Caroline Bos he founded UN Studio in 1998, working in
furniture and urban design, installations and theoretical texts on architecture
and art. Their best known work includes Moebius House and Erasmus Bridge
in Rotterdam.
Zaha Hadid
Architect and designer, born in Baghdad and currently
living in London. Her work extends from architecture to the visual arts,
including interior design and furniture. Her many designs have included
the Cardiff Opera House in Wales and the Firemens Barracks at the
Vitra Museum, Weil am Rhein, Germany.
