UNDERSTANDING AND DESIGN PLEASURE IN THE WORK OF 4 PARADIGMATIC DESIGNERS
The exhibition joins the creative worlds of two important classic designers - the Italian Bruno Munari (1907-1999) and the American couple Charles (1907-1978) and Ray (1912-1988) Eames - and two contemporary ones - the Spanish Martí Guixé (1964) and the Dutch Jurgen Bey (1965). What binds them is their attitude and engagement in design. They question themselves about the meaning of design and debate and publish their statements and thoughts.
About the same time as the Eames, in Italy, Bruno Munari was active as an outstanding cultural engaged designer. He was a designer with an artistic view and artistic results. Munari was highly interested in space, the meaning of an object, coincidence and joy. Eames and Munari had parallel thoughts during the same era, with an individual and original result.
Highly talented design originals are needed to create new ways of thinking. At present, at least two designers are creating design thoughts with a sense of joy and environmental understanding: Marti Guixé and Jurgen Bey.
Marti works and lives in Spain. He became internationally renowned through his food projects and a presentation of his work in Milan. Marti travels to give lectures and speak with people. Jurgen is a Dutchman. His work is presented internationally. Both Guixé and Bey explore the world of design by including society and its history in their design proposals. Both artists get their drive from themselves and rarely have contact with the industry. Both create outstanding and enjoyable results.
These four designers worked or are working with a great commitment to design. Their results were and are items that make us aware of and understand the era we live in. There is a case to be made to link the two young designers to the older ones and start a debate about the value of design today and the role played by mass consumption in an international context.
