SCHOOL OF VISUAL ARTS SUBWAY POSTERS, 1947 TO THE PRESENT
EXHIBITION — LISBOA
An exhibition of over 50 posters from a collection conceived at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) to be presented throughout the vast New York subway network. A brief foray into the history of the College and its renowned collective talent in the areas of design, illustration and photography.

Created by 29 faculty members and reaching back 60 years, the SVA’s subway posters have long been the institution’s most prominent form of advertising; several are in the permanent collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA and the Smithsonian Institution. “Underground Images” was initiated by MFA Illustration as Visual Essay faculty member Mirko Ilić and is curated by SVA Executive Vice President Anthony P. Rhodes, creative director for the posters since 2007.

Represented in the show are some of the most important names in design in the USA, such as Gail Anderson, Marshall Arisman, Gene Case, Ivan Chermayeff, Paul Davis, Louise Fili, Audrey Flack, Bob Gill, Robert Giusti, Milton Glaser, Phil Hays, Mirko Ilić, Viktor Koen, Stephen Kroninger, Marvin Mattelson, James McMullan, Jerry Moriarty, Tony Palladino, Stefan Sagmeister, David Sandlin, Paula Scher, Eve Sonneman, Gilbert Stone, George Tscherny, Sal De Vito, James Victore and Robert Weaver.
