LIZBON IN ZURICH
& FONTAINE AT VITRA CAMPUS

LIZBON IN ZURICH

On the past 10th of June, the Lisbon Gallery has inaugurated the “Lizbon in Zurich” exhibition, in partnership with the gallery Brand New World Salon, from Zurich. The opening took place during the Zurich Art Weekend, preceding the Art Basel 2018 opening.

“Lizbon in Zurich” presents 33 pieces that were mainly created through projects commissioned by experimentadesign: pieces that were part of the latest “First Stone” programme (2016 – 2017), the “Metamorphosis” project presented at the EXD’13 Biennale or even the “Efeito D” project for the EXD’09 Biennale. The exhibition also includes pieces of independent projects chosen by the artistic direction of Lisbon Gallery Design & Architecture.

This exhibition features works of some of the most important figures of the contemporary Portuguese and international architecture and design such as Amanda Levete, Bruno MM, Claudia Moreira Salles, Eneida Tavares, Fernando Brízio, Geckeler Michels, Jasper Morrison, Jorge Carreira, Joschua Brunn, Manuel Amaral Netto, Michael Anastassiades, Miguel Vieira Baptista, Naoto Fukasawa and Vítor Agostinho.

Most of the selected works were produced in Portugal, using national raw materials, such as stone or cork. The preference over natural and organic materials or with a certain weight and history, like ceramics, projects in itself an identifying characteristic of the Lisbon Gallery: its investment in the area of sustainability and innovation.

FONTAINE AT VITRA CAMPUS

The Vitra Campus, in Weil Am Rhein, in Germany, has since June 13, another permanent piece, produced in Portugal and now installed in its gardens.

One of the world’s most important design studio, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, have chosen a the project “Fontaine”, that they had designed for First Stone, a programme commissioned by experimentadesign in partnership with Assimagra, made with national stone – the unusual Verde Serpa marble – to join the prestigious industrial campus.

In the context of the “First Stone” programme (2016–2017), Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have designed an 8-meter length fountain in Portuguese rosa sem veios marble, which was first presented to the public within the scope of the experimentadesign exhibition at Lina Bo Bardi’s Glass House, in São Paulo, in August of 2017.

Fontaine now gains a new version in Vitra Campus, of 16 meter-length, maintaining its modular construction and in line with the designers interest in the intersection between the manmade and natural elements, exploring in this case the combination of stone and water. The result is an artificial stream playing with sound and movement, just as it is a playground for children, where twigs and folded paper become floating vessels.

This piece is inserted in an industrial context where, besides the buildings designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira, Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry, Herzog & de Meuron, Tadao Ando, Nicholas Grimshaw, Renzo Piano and SANAA, there are also other permanent works by Carsten Höller, Jasper Morrison, Thomas Schütte and Tobias Rehberger among others.
