Comprising pieces by a diverse group of international product designers with a greatly established and recognized body of work, the Common Sense collection explores ideas concerning everyday objects and utensils made out of Portuguese stone, a million-year old, sustainable material. It is the result of a process that delves into themes associated with the relationship between design and natural materials, and its subsequent role in contemporary society.

Aric Chen, the Creative Director of Design Miami/Basel, remarks that: Common Sense brings the skills and talents of some of the world's leading designers to stone. To see geology transformed with such honesty, simplicity and elegance provides a reassuring and visceral response to Elements: Earth, the theme of this year's Design Miami/Basel, which looks at how designers are reimagining materials, resources and making at a time when human activity is changing the nature of our planet.

Through Common Sense, Claudia Moreira Salles, Estudio Campana, Fernando Brízio, Jasper Morrison, Michael Anastassiades, Miguel Vieira Baptista and Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec coalesce contemporary design with Portuguese stone, highlighting the national industry responsible for its extraction and transformation and providing it with an international stage. The intricacies and particular beauty of these pieces are also, as the name of the collection suggests, an exercise of contemplation on the idea of common sense and simplicity, both of which are sometimes lost in times of great technological advances and formal and functional complexity.

Common Sense is a drive for innovation and a new reading on one of the oldest and most sustainable materials at our disposal – Portuguese stone – transporting its power, beauty and unique characteristics into a contemporary framework through design.
