Primeira Pedra | Save The Date
First Stone will celebrate 4 years of projects in 2020. Lisbon will host a great event for the programme, divided into two main moments: a conference and a retrospective exhibition.

On the 27th of June 2020, all the 37 projects and over 50 pieces created in the context of this initiative, which has brought together 33 designers, architects and artists from all over the world, will be presented at the National Coach Museum, in Lisbon. On the same day a conference about the themes encompassed by the programme will be held, gathering a group of First Stone participants and special guests.

Over the last four years, this programme has been developing several research and development projects that focus on the unique features of Portuguese stone. Working closely with the national industry of stone extraction and transformation, First Stone has invited some of the most prominent names in the fields of design, architecture and, more recently, art, to immerse themselves in the fascinating universe of this natural resource, underlining its timelessness and challenging them to explore original and unconventional approaches.

Between 2016 and 2017, during the first phase of the programme, 3 projects — Resistance, Still Motion and Common Sense — were developed, originating 26 pieces made out of Portuguese stone; and exhibitions in Venice, Milan, Weil am Rhein, Sao Paulo, London and New York. The second part of the programme produced the Mint Street installation in London, and the Expanded exhibition in Venice, to which will be added a presentation in New York, another one in Paris and also a retrospective exhibition in Lisbon, at the renovated National Coach Museum.

If you are in Venice don’t miss the chance to see Expanded, the most recent First Stone exhibition that opened during the 58th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. On display in the gardens of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini until November 24, 2019, the exhibition is composed of original works by Carsten Höller, Julião Sarmento and Marina Abramović, all produced in Portuguese stone and conceived to be shown in a public context.

The artworks created by these renowned artists explore new perceptions of space, scale, time and place, inviting visitors to expand their preconceptions about each of these elements.
