Diller Scofidio + Renfro
Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the renowned architecture and design studio based in New York, is one of the participants of City Cortex by Amorim.
Often incorporating a dimension of cultural and urban intervention, DS+R is responsible for extraordinary contemporary architecture projects, including the High Line in New York: a public park built over a 2.4 kilometer stretch of abandoned railroad. This conversion was enormously important as it breathed new life into a formerly obsolete urban structure of Manhattan, offering a new public space with a strong presence of natural elements to the citizens and visitors of New York. This feat also contributed towards the economic and social appreciation of all adjacent spaces, bringing a new order to a dysfunctional part of the city.
DS+R were also responsible for the recent expansion of MoMA, which reopened last week, as well as the design of The Shed, a cultural organization that promotes, develops and presents work across various artistic disciplines. Its structure, encompassing 18 500 square metres, spread over 8 floors, has been conceptualized to be physically adaptable, with the ability to expand and alter its form according to the profile of the work it is presenting.
Currently, the studio is working on a variety of high-profile projects across the globe, including the Tianjin Juilliard School, an exciting cultural and social hub that will redefine the relationships between musical education, performance and public space, with a building designed to invite people to participate in the creative and musical process. Another highlight is the new building for the Image and Sound Museum in Rio de Janeiro, inspired by Copacabana beach and designed to function as an extension of the famous boardwalk by Roberto Burle Marx, which will vertically extend into the museum.
In the scope of the City Cortex programme, promoted by Corticeira Amorim and curated by experimentadesign, the studio has been invited to develop urban intervention pieces for Manhattan, a territory it already dominates, using mostly Portuguese cork. In order to better explore and discover the characteristics and potential of this natural material, Elizabeth Diller and Benjamin Gilmartin, both partners of the studio, visited the Corticeira Amorim factories and showrooms in Portugal in December 2018. The results of DS+R’s creative process will be presented during the second semester of 2020, in New York.
Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) is an award-winning design and architecture studio with a portfolio that delves into the fields of architecture, urban design, communication design, artistic installations and multimedia performances, through a multidisciplinary and progressive approach.
