experimentadesign challenged 5 promising Portuguese graphic design ateliers to create interventions for the windows of the terrace of the Lounging Space, located at the Convento da Trindade. The approach is contextualized by the theme of this year’s Biennale – No Borders – and the interventions explore the trespassing of borders, questioning relationships and limits. The windows are themselves illuminated boxes that reveal their content, projecting it outwards and transforming the space, each representing a different approach to a single format.

AND ATELIER

Our work tries to graphically explore the changeable, ephemeral and relative relationship between the notions of interior and exterior. A line is an element usually associated with the making/drawing of a border. Here, it does not assume that purpose of separating something. Instead, it focuses on the construction and search for new areas and new graphic territories, through the constant redefinition of its positions and relationships in a plain.

When an invitation delineates an intervention in a window, the first thought falls upon that same window and its relationship with the theme. The absence of borders (No Borders) is put into question by the inherent limitations of said window.

One of the texts alludes to the history of media, and to the beginning of the drawing of borders, potentiated by maritime discoveries - taken from “Operating Manual For Spaceship Earth” by Buckminster Fuller. The second text alludes to the wreck of a ship that transported almost 500 passengers and that caught fire, on the 3rd of October, near Lampedusa, in Sicily, southern Italy. The ship transported refugees of African origin looking for a better life.

The theme “No Borders” is illustrated in the ambiguity that characterizes it in this contemporary era and the questioning of the openness of borders. In the context of Design practice, we are opening space for confrontation and interdisciplinary discussion. Are we in fact opening geographical borders, or are we steering towards a new kind of limitation?

This project aims to potentiate the relevance of media in the contemporary. It operates as a publication that you can access using your smartphone, exploring the relationship between relational design and editing.
