EXD’15 continues the process of renovation of the Biennale instigated in 2013, presenting even more new features in this edition by decentralizing its activity from the capital and broadening its scope to Portuguese-speaking African nations.
As such, this year the Biennale inaugurates in Porto and Matosinhos, solidifying strategic partnerships with both Municipalities, and then opens in Lisbon with several events launching over 2 days. This expansion allows for broader access to content for new audiences as well as a more active involvement of the creative community in the North of the country.
2015 marks a reinforcement of the Biennale’s work into the creativity of the Portuguese-speaking universe, through the presentation of a research project that explores design in Africa, focussing on Portuguese-speaking countries.
The Education Service has also been redesigned for this edition, investing in an effective training component, geared towards an adult audience ranging from students to professionals, who have a specific interest in the areas of action of the Biennale.
Owing to its profoundly innovative nature, since its inception in 1999 EXD has been a national and international platform for thought, research and independent creative dissemination, and is committed to continuing this legacy into the future.
THE BIENNALE
2015
AS FAR AS THE MIND CAN SEE
THE THEME
The ability to discover and create something entirely new is directly related to the way we use one of our most fascinating biological devices: the brain. The act of designing is closely connected to our ability to see what is not yet formalized and to draw it, so it can then be produced. This possibility is unique to humanity.
Establishing a link with the theme of the 2013 edition, No Borders, which focussed on the expansion of boundaries and the idea of collective scope, the theme of EXD’15 is centred on the individual, their unique capacities for abstraction and invention, on what allows them to go that extra mile, to find different perspectives and to design something new. These are individual abilities common to us all but which vary widely in terms of plasticity and skill. They boast different characteristics, both on a biological and contextual level. Although individual, they are the basis for generating products in various formats that are capable of developing within a contemporary and global framework, thus, inevitably, transforming the collective.
The 9th edition of the Biennale deals with the individual intellectual dynamics of creative production and the ability to see as far as the mind allows, observing it at different times and in different areas.

THE CITIES
LISBOA, PORTO, MATOSINHOS
This year the Biennale spreads across three cities, Lisbon, Porto and Matosinhos, providing cultural stimulus and allowing local communities to engage in a more active participation with the Biennale events.
In this edition, the programme for the North of the country aims to amplify access to content for new audiences and promote a more direct involvement with the Biennale, especially for the creative community of the region.
The Paços do Concelho of Matosinhos (building housing the Municipality), an emblematic structure by the architect Alcino Soutinho, and the last floor of the Palácio dos Correios do Porto, initially designed by the architect Carlos Ramos, are the two spaces that take in the Biennale exhibitions.
In Lisbon, the historical Belém area is once again the host of the EXD main programme, in turn supported by the Lounging Space – the communication and information heart of the Biennale and space housing the Education Service - which this year will be located in the central Príncipe Real area.
