EXPANDED, the next exhibition of the First Stone Programme, opens on the 9th of May around 5:30 pm at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini. Produced to be presented during the 58th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, Expanded is comprised of original works by Carsten Höller, Julião Sarmento and Marina Abramović, all conceived to be displayed in a public context. Carsten Höller | © Ricardo Gonçalves The artworks presented explore, in one way or another, our perception of space, scale, time and place, as well as the possibility of expanding some of our limitations, be they cultural or genetic, emotional or rational. Julião Sarmento | © Ricardo Gonçalves Produced in Portuguese stone, a million-year-old natural resource, they share this unifying element that bestows them with a deep timelessness and resilience, somewhat contradicting the chaos and superficiality of the contemporary world. Marina Abramović | © Ricardo Gonçalves Placed within the gardens of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, immersed in nature and displayed together, these pieces provide visitors with moments of experimentation and confrontation, underlining the value of art and culture in public spaces.
