INTERACTIVE INSTALLATION PRESENTED AT EXD'09 GIVES ORIGIN TO AN IPAD AND IPHONE APPLICATION

Dance Writer, created by Peter and Johanna Bil'ak and presented at EXD'09 has been adapted into a new iPad and iPhone application.

In its original conception, it is an interactive installation presented to the public in the exhibition Quick, Quick, Slow, curated by design historian Emily King. This exhibition was held at the Berardo Collection Museum between September 11 of 2009 and January 3 of 2010, and it registered a record audience in the 5th edition of the Biennale, with 55.211 visitors.

The new application of Dance Writer created for iPad and iPhone allows the creation of animated text messages where each letter materializes itself through dynamic dance figures. The application converts common characters into sequential movements of contemporary choreographies.

Ellen Lupton, a contemporary design curator at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York, defined this project, which has been amassing a very warm reception among critical experts, as "a new dimension of typography."

The authors, Peter and Johanna Bil'ak, founded the design studio and type foundry Typotheque, which is devoted to the creation of communication design projects and typography in diversified media. Valentina Scagli is the dancer who provides movement to Lukás Timulak's choreography, in a video by Taco Zwaanswijk, and programmed by Resolume.
