As dreams can turn into nightmares, so they can become opportunities. Following a century of concentrated power and unprecedented rapidity in the development of the built world, the ability to face and transform the unexpected consequences of unfulfilled utopian ambitions can be used to reclaim leftover landscapes. The workshop will analyze the case studies put forth by the Utilitas Interrupta exhibition and use cultural planning, communication and  collaborative brainstorming to recognize the potential and transform the meaning of these relics of a not so distant past.

The architecture of misfortune and natural disaster.

The foiled architecture of worthy ideals, rendered obsolete by the indomitable force pressure of technological progress.
19 NOV — 16:00

Taking the content on view as departure point, participants will engage guest specialists in a conversation on the relationship between architecture and our capacity, as a society to identify the changing nature of the priorities and values upon which we build our aspirations and material undertakings.

Guided tours

Conducted by trained assistants, these tours offer a close, insightful look at the key concepts of the exhibition. Participants will be better able to contextualize, interpret and interrelate the contents on view.

Ephemeral houses

Unlike some that are meant to last forever leaving a mark on the landscape, these constructions are temporary.
This workshop uses lightweight and recycled materials to build a mobile home for nomadic living, a one-person structure or hub.

Hidden Architectures

After visiting the exhibition, participants will look closely at the examples of forgotten or overlooked infrastructure works. Next, participants will explore drawing, scale models and other design methods to find new functions for these obsolete structures.
