As dreams can turn into nightmares, so they can become opportunities. Following a century of concentrated power and unprecedented rapidity in the development of the built world, the ability to face and transform the unexpected consequences of unfulfilled utopian ambitions can be used to reclaim leftover landscapes. The workshop will analyze the case studies put forth by the Utilitas Interrupta exhibition and use cultural planning, communication and  collaborative brainstorming to recognize the potential and transform the meaning of these relics of a not so distant past.

From a dataset, participants will be invited to explore its meaning through the informational gathering, analyzing, sorting and filtering data (Live it!) And set up a system of organization and representation of content (Viz it!) Developing models that provide a significant interaction with the user. Workshop Inútil
LOUNGING SPACE
14–17 NOV

Coordination—
Cabra Cega

In this workshop we will tackle two opposite perspectives – useful and useless – as departure points for a creative process that will seek to promote both their coming together and the space between them. Together we will analyze chains of dependency of objects with different functions, the existence of objects devoid of functions, reaching all the way to the Swiss Army knifes of life. From chindogu – Japanese trend for odd inventions – to the transformation of waste in functional objects. From the need to reinvent a world through the scarcity of matter, to the pornography of material plenty. Hoping that, as a result of this workshop, participants create their own objects from usefulness and uselessness, to be shaped in an online platform created for that effect.

Typography in architecture:
Useless artifacts or useless to care about?

LOUNGING SPACE
14–20 Nov

Coordination—
Joana Lessa, Paulo T. Silva

Motivated by the fast and quiet disappearance of old typographical artefacts in architectural facades, this workshop aims to foster reflection on the value of typography as a value in the place ‘s identity construction. Also, it wants to challenge participants to look critically at the validity of preservation versus destruction of artifacts, guided by a diverse team (Design, Typography, Architecture). It is not intended to raise nostalgic or staganated approaches, but instead to look for transformative and intervening values of identity, on the grounds that this attitude is the most appropriate route to the contemporary construction of identity.

28–30 NOV

Coordination—
Vivóeusébio

Writing as a means of transmission and recording of information and knowledge is a valuable tool to our day-to-day. Its rules set limits and open doors to individual expression. But what if the rules changed the context? And if the meaning of text would vary depending on the direction or size of each symbol? what would primitive men do with A4 sheets and pens instead of rock walls and pigments, or Egyptians with hieroglyphics if they lived in Alaska. Maybe the "1984" Orwell's newspeak could counteract with the help of sign language for "Dune" by Frank Herbert. Should we use the spelling of Tolkien's elves carefuly to protect ourselves from the real threat of xkritah bue kridahs Messaging? During this workshop we will propose alternative writing systems for the creation of new codes, for new contexts.
