EXD'11/LISBOA —
historical paths to contemporary design and architecture

With an ongoing programme that invites exploration and discussion on use and its absence, the EXD’11/LISBOA design biennale is your best reason to come reconnect with — or you’re your first foray into — the Portuguese capital.

With exhibitions in striking venues ranging from museums in Gothic ruins and a Roman theatre, to one of Europe’s leading geological collections and an 18h century reservoir, among others, EXD’11/LISBOA unveils original content in an unexpected context. The biennale affords an anticipatory look at contemporary design and architecture in a path through an historical capital.

In addition to the five core exhibitions, the programme of the Lounging Space and the Education Service’s ongoing calendar of activities, the Biennale launches a film cycle on November 10, Colisões — The films of Robert Breer.

COLISÕES —
the films of Robert Breer

In a co-production with Cinemateca – Portuguese Film Museum, Colisões celebrates the work of american filmmaker Robert Breer. A cult figure in animation film, his unique approach to this genre took visual experimentation to its technical and poetic limits. Running until November 30 and concentrated in 4 sessions corresponding to different stages in Breers filmography, the cycle also presents two documentary works.

Highlighting Breer’s enduring influence, German filmmaker Klaus Wyborny will deliver the lecture entitled “Some points about Robert Breer and consequences for modern filmmaking”. Saturday, November 26, 6 pm, at the EXD'11/LISBOA Lounging Space.

Colisões joins the ongoing documentary cycle Resíduos, also held at Cinemateca. Invoking the “biography of things”, Resíduos looks into the preservation of actions and objects but also the remains, traces and what is abandoned or discarded in the processes of making and manufacturing.

Until December 9 and along 11 sessions, Resíduos features works by, among others, Richard Serra, Anthony McCall, Gordon Matta-Clark as well as filmmakers Klaus Wyborny and Hartmut Bitomsky, who will both attend the screening of their films.
