UNMAPPING THE WORLD is an exploration into the field of reactive map-making practices. It unveils the apparent neutrality of professional cartography through contemporary engaged mapping projects. In the context of the collection of the Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical (The Tropical Research Institute), critical and poetic works are shown that capture plural truths about nations, borderlines and the individual within it. They show our 21st century societies from bottom-up through designers, artists and architects that are infected by the subjects they are talking about. What defines their borders nowadays? Is it geography, economy, the internet or their personal mood? Would the liquid times we live in, imply a fundamental different approach to cartography? Is there a way that we can unmap our worlds to be able to see things with fresh eyes?
Unmapping the World is a partnership between EXD'13 / Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical.
